Current Events

The next General Meeting is Tuesday, November 26th, 2024 starting at 7:30 pm.

Dr. David Moss, Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental and Geosciences at Sam Houston State University, will be our guest at the last General Meeting of the year on November 26th. Just an hour north of Houston, Sam Houston State has an active Geosciences department and several of their students have been HGMS scholarship recipients in recent years. Dr. Moss will not only give a presentation about his primary research on modern and fossil bivalves but will discuss ways in which SHSU and HGMS might develop a closer relationship.

Dr. Moss’ research lies at the intersection of paleontology and sclerochronology (the study of accretionary hard parts in marine organisms). He is particularly interested in understanding how the so-called ‘pageant of life’ has unfolded throughout Earth’s history. To do this, he examines variations in lifespan and growth rates of modern and fossil bivalves to answer large-scale macroevolutionary questions.

Business meeting will include Voting of officer chair changes. If you would like to be involved and help make our community great, now is your chance! Let Logan know before our general meeting at [email protected].
Current officer positions available – Note that you may apply for other positions as well!

Who We Are

The Houston Gem and Mineral Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to study in the areas of Earth Science and related fields and arts. A major focus of the HGMS is education. Through classes offered at the clubhouse and through our scholarship fund, the HGMS encourages its individuals and groups to better their knowledge and understanding in these areas. Our annual show features educational activities for public, private and home-schooled children, and exhibits and demonstrations by members and guests.

The society is open to all persons with rockhound or fossil “fever.” We offer something for every family member, from junior members to senior citizens, and our activities encourage family participation.

The Houston Gem and Mineral Society (HGMS) is a member of the South Central Federation of Mineral Societies (SCFMS) and is affiliated with the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS).
